Next Exit: The real world
Saturday 24th January

I'm in Manchester city centre going around the shops with a guy called Marko - he's from Bangladesh. We know each other because he worked in a local JJB Sports store which has now closed down. I haven't seen him for a year. He works in IT now.

Marko: "People are changing very quickly now. The technology is changing people faster than the people."
Me: "What are you on about. I thought you were an IT guy."
Marko: "I've been reading lots of psychology books."

Mufti takes a book out of his bag. It has a picture in it and he does a routine where he asks the person questions about the picture. He says there's a dog in it or something. The person can't spot it. Then he tells them that white is the dominant colour and they see it. It's to do with people seeing a dominant them for example, that people expect the picture to be black on a white background, not white on a black background. I don't really see the point of it."

Marko tries the routine on a guy who works in Urbis. The guy enjoys taking part. It's a good routine to get to know people - having a book and discussing something.
