Friday 31st July

I'm in the Stamford pub in Altrincham. I'm with someone called Ben who I used to know from school. We're having a good time discussing what we're up to.

Then we end up in the same conversation I always seem to end up in with friends I've known a while. We start discussing how people don't go out and enjoy themselves as much in pubs or bars.

Ben comments
Ben: "I can't get over how quiet it is in here."
Me: "I know. It's a Friday night. I remember the Griffin next door - in the 90's it used to have 2 door staff covering each door. The pub was so packed you couldn't move easily. Outside was busy too with every table taken."
Ben: "What does everyone do now?"
Me: "Facebook. Or drink at home. Mind you, how do they drink at home with their parents there?"
Ben: "They're probably on Facebook."
Me: "I remember Manchester on a Friday night in the 90's. One and a half hour queue outside Royales by 11:30pm. One in one out. I've never seen it busy like that nowadays."
Ben: "It's not is it."
Me: "Remember when to get from here to over there 5 metres away, in a club could take like 10 minutes because it was so busy."
Ben: "Yes. The kids just don't go out anymore."
Me: "Maybe they're all working hard at A-levels and so on. They work like athletes nowadays. It's like the David Beckham era compared to Roy Keane. Roy Keane would go out with the United team having drinking sessions at the pub. The David Beckham group would go for a meal or go to bed early."
Me: "It's like what me and Alex K noticed about clothes. You see all these fancy clothes in River Island, Topman, and they sall. But no-one ever wears them to the clubs."
Ben laughs.
Ben: "It's right. They probably wear them for a photo taken for Facebook."
Me: "When we used to go clothes shopping it was for a purpose - for a night out. Now the only place I see any of these clothes worn is by people going to the shop to buy more clothes!"
Ben laughs and agrees.
